Empowering Informed Choices for a Thriving Marine Ecosystem
The Sustainable Seafood Program helps both consumers and businesses make sustainable seafood choices, protecting marine habitats and ensuring the long-term availability of seafood. By empowering consumers and businesses to make informed decisions, the program helps drive sustainability across the industry.
Framing the Problem
The Sustainable Seafood Program faced several challenges, primarily around the complexity of managing a large volume of seafood inventory while ensuring that each product could be quickly qualified as "sustainable." With partners such as Sobeys and White Spot contributing substantial inventory, it became increasingly difficult to track and manage the sustainability of each product.
The lack of an interface for partners to easily view and manage their sustainable inventory created further friction. Additionally, the seafood supply chain, particularly in the restaurant and retail sectors, required constant updates, which made it challenging to maintain an efficient and streamlined inventory management process.
Laying a Foundation
To address these challenges, we started by holding discovery sessions with key stakeholders to gain a deep understanding of their existing processes and needs. These sessions allowed us to uncover pain points and opportunities for improvement, especially in how businesses managed their seafood inventory and tracked sustainability.
We then workshopped potential solutions and mapped out the flow of data through the supply chain to identify key areas where the user experience could be improved. Prototypes were developed to simplify the logging of suppliers, procurement, and supply chain data, ensuring that partners could easily track sustainability while meeting their operational needs.
Data Driven Solutions
The solutions we implemented focused on simplifying and automating inventory management while providing clear insights into sustainability. We enabled businesses to bulk import their inventory, making it easier and faster to collect and vet product applications. A new dashboard was designed to display sustainability-related data, showing trends in inventory volume and sustainability over time.
For high-volume, multi-location organizations, we created tools that allowed them to allocate inventory to specific locations, streamlining their operations. Modular tables were introduced to address complex logging needs, allowing businesses to track the status of seafood inventory (e.g., purchased, repurposed, or sold) while ensuring sustainability compliance. These solutions provided clarity around sustainable product recommendations, helping partners make informed decisions.
Streamlining Inventory Imports: We enabled businesses to bulk import seafood inventory, simplifying the process of collecting and vetting product applications. This feature significantly reduced manual input, saving time and improving operational efficiency for organizations managing large-scale inventories.
Tracking Sustainability Progress: To support data-driven decision-making, we designed a dashboard that displays sustainability metrics and inventory volume trends over time. This tool helps businesses monitor their progress and make informed decisions to align with sustainability goals.
Empowering Multi-Location Management: For high-volume, multi-location organizations, we implemented advanced management tools that allow users to allocate supply to specific locations efficiently. This innovation ensures that businesses can seamlessly manage inventory distribution while maintaining transparency and control.
Ensuring Compliance Through Modular Tables: We developed modular tables to handle complex inventory logging with statuses like purchased, repurposed, or sold. This functionality ensures businesses can accurately track their inventory and maintain compliance with sustainability standards.
Measurable Learnings
The implementation of these solutions has led to significant improvements in the way partners manage their seafood inventory. Over 500+ partners are now actively managing their inventory through the Sustainable Seafood platform, which has helped drive adoption across various businesses. The system now tracks 1,400+ Ocean Wise Recommended options, enabling businesses to easily recommend sustainable seafood to their customers. Additionally, more than 1,000 suppliers have been logged into the database, ensuring that the program continues to expand and positively impact the seafood industry. These results demonstrate the success of the program in helping businesses make sustainable seafood choices while enhancing operational efficiency.
